Daniel Shieh is an artist from Taiwan. He creates interactive artworks that alter the power dynamics between participants. He received a Master in Design Studies (MDes) in Art, Design, and the Public Domain at Harvard Graduate School of Design. Through manipulating perspective, sense of distance, and visibility, he constructs physical environments where the power dynamics of being with another person is rewired. Often combining different levels of intimacy, such as standing at a distance from someone yet feeling your bodies merge, his work encourages different interpretations of another person’s humanity to occupy their mind simultaneously, offering a layered perception of the Other—as an individual who exists independent of you and as a being that mirrors your consciousness. Centering on the act of mutual perception, my work reaffirms our existence in each other’s minds.
